Using sustainable materials, making environmentally-conscious choices and employing energy saving technologies are now fundamental requirements of office design. Environmental best practice focuses on design to enhance worker productivity and satisfaction while reducing demand on the environment.
Area Sq is a leading office design and fit-out company, specialising in the creation of innovative, sustainable and inspiring office interiors. Our own green credentials allow us to minimise the impact of our own activities and those of our clients’ refurbishment or relocation projects.
We work closely with our clients to achieve a sustainable office design and fit-out but also any relevant accreditations to “validate” the initial efforts in creating a green workplace. This helps our clients continue their journey towards environmental excellence, beyond the fit-out project itself.
Having invested in achieving a sustainable office fit-out or refurbishment project, the final step is making sure you gain recognition for your initiative and hard work. Here are our five steps to help you achieve this:
1. Environmental Accreditations
Gaining an environmental accreditation for your project is a great way to enhance the environmental performance of your workspace. It also contributes to raising awareness of your green credentials, thus helping with recruitment and business development.

2. Carbon Negative Project
We can calculate the carbon footprint of your project by measuring the emissions created during the fit-out or refurbishment process. This would include the carbon footprint of every single material used, M&E calculations and even subcontractors’ travel. We can then work with you to offset the resulting emissions.

3. Donate waste materials to community projects
Diverting waste from landfill benefits the local community and helps enhance your green credentials. We have arranged for materials to be reused in local schools, allotments and community projects. Recently we passed on materials and gave labour time to help build a Scout Hut. Please let us know if you have any similar suggestions during the build of your project.
4. Awards
Winning awards for sustainable designs, fit-outs and refurbishments projects also helps validate your ongoing commitment towards sustainability. We work closely with our clients from the planning stages to ensure that their office complies with environmental regulations and that they have all the relevant information for their award submission. You can choose to enter a number of awards depending on your aims and objectives, the needs of your business and an assessment of what is achievable.

5. Pre & post construction events
There is no better way to promote the sustainability of your project than inviting people in to see it. We have found this to be very effective for clients, especially when they host events 'before' and 'after' the works.
